THEME: Relations between humans and non-human animals
2021-02-01 For the second year running, Current Swedish Archaeology begins with a themed group of research papers which provide a variety of perspectives on a shared topic. This year we present seven peer-reviewed contributions exploring a theme of human-animal relations, based on a workshop held in Kalmar in late 2018. Kristin Armstrong Oma and Joakim Goldhahn provide an introduction to the topic and each individual paper, showing how a focus on relations between humans and non-human animals within archaeological contexts possesses great potential to bring different kinds of archaeologies together. The theme includes papers presenting the results from natural science-based analyses, image-based research, studies of depositional rituals, and discussions arising from personal experience, making for a lively and varied collection. Omslagsbild 2014-03-15 2014 has been a turbulent year for the humanities in Scandinavia. The financial support for Swedish scientific journals we reported in last year’s issue still remains to be resolved. We have been granted support for the next two issues of CSA, but the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) will no longer support scientific journals financially after 2017. Another debated issue this year was the proposal to end the financial support for Sweden’s three Mediterranean institutes. The proposal was later withdrawn, but the future funding of the institutes is still uncertain (see the notice by Anders Högberg in this issue). And, in Denmark, a Minister has proposed sharp cuts in the funding of a category of “unnecessary” university courses (mainly in the humanities) that do not directly mlead to employment. We will continue to report on these matters and the status of the humanities in coming issues. (ur förordet, läs mer om innehållet i nr 22 år 2014). »

Omslagsbild 2013-05-25 The interdisciplinary approach of archaeometry has found increasing appreciation by archaeologists and is now considered indispensable and an integral part of archaeological studies. The last three decades have seen a steady growth in the development and application of scientific methods to archaeology. New results are published regularly. Classical archaeological disputes concerning ethnicity and migration are targeted and the results are frequently argued to rewrite prehistory in a groundbreaking way. In recent years archaeometry has become a key researcharea for the development of new archaeological knowledge. Läs mer om innehållet i Current Swedish Archaeology nr 21 år 2013. »
