Analysing substance use, gender and partying


Gender convergence is a salient theme in contemporary alcohol and drugs research. It has been suggested that the practices of women's and men's intoxicant use have become more similar, at least in the western parts of the world.



The volume at hand approaches the ambiguities of gender in intoxicant use by focusing on the factors that lie behind and produce the quantitatively perceived findings. From a cultural perspective the volume specifies some local, subgroup, and individual aspects that in epidemiological perspectives are often bundled into general aggregates and summary approximations.



The volume includes four empirical studies on gendered intoxicant use. They share some common features even though differing in their theoretical and methodological choices. The main assumption in all texts is that the study of subjective involvement in drinking or drug taking is essential for our understanding of gendered conditions and forms of substance use. Secondly, the gendered forms of substance use are analysed in relation with their immediate situational and other cultural contexts. Thirdly, all articles deal with aspects of control showing that drinking or drug taking represents a form of human action that by no means is free from external or internal control. Finally, embodied practices connected to substance use, such as dancing, flirting or fighting, are dealt with.
