The globalised alcohol and drug questions

ULRICH BECK HAS FOR MANY YEARS BEEN PREOCCUPIED with the implications of globalisation for societies and for social research. Becks notes: ”At the beginning of the 21st century the conditio humana cannot be understood nationally or locally but only globally. ’Globalisation’ is a non-linear, dialectic process in which the global and local do not exist as cultural polarities but as combined and mutually implicating principles.” (Beck 2002, 17). Several articles in this issue of Nordic Studies of Alcohol and Drugs can be read as investigations of the present globality of the alcohol and drug questions, with a local (Nordic) perspective.

Thomas Karlsson’s, Esa Österberg’s and Christoffer Tigerstedt’s commentary documents the extensive border trade in alcohol in the regions between Denmark and Sweden, Sweden and Norway and Finland and Estonia. Two articles, by Robin Room and Bernt Bull, dealing with the WHO and the alcohol question, also give a rather positive view of the role of Nordic alcohol policy in a globalised world. Three texts on young people’s partying in Liverpool, Tallinn and Helsinki illustrate the European variety of partying patterns and responses to them.

We hope that the articles in this volume can stimulate further local alcohol and drug related studies of a globalised world.
