2012-11-11 The translator of poetry is peculiarly vulnerable. The relative brevity of poems leaves them, as it were, naked to scrutiny. The gimlet-eyed critic is far more likely to home in on an infelicitous choice of phrase in a slim poetry collection than on, say, page 394 of a 600-page novel. This has been evident in the recent correspondence in the "Guardian" in the wake of reviews of Robin Fulton Macpherson’s new volume of Tranströmer interpretations. SBR salutes his willingness to stand up and be counted, and applauds him as a role model for the visibility of the translator at a time when reviews, even in serious publications, still depressingly often fail to credit translators at all.»

2012-11-11 The short pier running out into the Thames from the north Kent town of Gravesend was for many years home to a plaque marking one of the very few places in Britain ever visited by world-famous Swedish playwright August Strindberg. The plaque, removed during renovations, now languishes at the back of a crowded storeroom, but the man continues to fascinate and provoke us in equal measure, as this special issue shows. Charlotte Purkis has done fine detective work on the events of his 1949 centenary and his fan base at the time the plaque went up.»

2012-11-11 A recent New Yorker cartoon reflects on what some Anglophone writers have to contend with while Nordic fiction remains in vogue: a publisher looks disparagingly at a submission and says to its hapless author: ‘Can’t you make it Swedish?’ Meanwhile, Edith Grossman in her "Why Translation Matters" (Yale University Press, 2010) cites ‘one of my favorite cartoons, in which a bewildered translator asks a disgruntled author, “Do you not be happy with me as the translator of the books of you?”’»

2012-11-11 At SBR we work a lot with people in the business of seeking publicity and exposure for their national literatures. One sought-after route these days is to be chosen as the focus country, or geographical area, at a major book fair. A whole continent, Africa, was in that coveted position at last autumn’s Gothenburg Book Fair and Swedish publishers, especially small independents, significantly boosted the number of titles they published from Africa as a result (Source: Svensk bokhandel). It is impossible to gauge the benefits precisely, of course, but everyone is keen to seize the opportunity. ‘Les lettres nordiques à l’honneur!’ announces the website of the Salon du Livre in Paris this spring, offering a fine array of authors assembled by the Nordic countries, and Finland is investing serious time and money, including gearing up translators of Finland-Swedish, as it prepares to be the focus country at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2014.»
